Album Review @ Apmlifier Magazine

For those of you who have missed ‘90s trip-hop, you’ll be happy to know that Quarter Acre Lifestyle is here to save the day. Founded by two brothers from New Zealand, Aaron and Cameron Pollock, the band’s second release, Blood on the Lawn, is a perfect candidate for the X-Files soundtrack. If you’ve been on an “Indie Rock Only” campaign for the majority of your youth, this album will finally force you out of your comfort zone and up on your feet. Often likened to Massive Attack, the majority of the album entwines electronic rock with rhythmic beats, creating a heavy, industrial feel. The orchestration of standout tra ck “Escalator” builds upon layers, mimicking musical stairs, with each stanza contributing a new texture, creating drama and mystery which only add to the theatrical aspects of the album. There are also quite a few big, held-out distorted guitar chords reminiscent of Radiohead’s “Creep” which no one can deny. The highlight of the album is “What Would It Mean to You” where the jazz rooted bass lines couple with saucy ghost notes to create a nice pocket for the rhythm section…and recall U2. Repetitive lyrics and ill-placed electronic breakdowns tend to dilute the back end of the album somewhat but Blood on the Lawn is atmospheric, laidback, and grows on you in ways never expected.
